Apparently I read this book ages ago (it was like a ritual of coming of age in a certain time and place) and to be honest, I didn’t remember much of it other than the strange title (because some of the books Jilly wrote were soooo de rigueur – Rupert Campbell Black says everything – and somehow they entered the lexicon), but almost immediately I began, if not to memorize the entire plot, then to receive a synaptic rush from heady YSL Opium fragrance while watching The Rivals. Instead of laughter, he has a giggle, and he is cheeky, not obscene.

He quickly built a world: the 80s, greedy old Thatcherites and yuppies, homesick wives and formidable warrior women, treating everyone like meat no matter what they did, harmony, cigars and singing birds, layers of the English class, the United States. and the socio-political commentary, although not shoved in your face, is much clearer than when you read books.

Perhaps it’s because I’m older and have met a lot of people, so Cooper’s criticism of British culture is more obvious, but I think it’s also the cast, accents, costumes, revealing the habits of each character (to quote Bordeaux) and the present. Okay, it’s a bit of a pantomime, but, my God, why not?
