Ron Perlman tried it, but Guillermo del Toro found his reading completely off-putting

A mysterious device designed to grant its owner eternal life after four hundred years, leaving a trail of destruction in its path. In an interview included in the Criterion edition of this film, Ron Perlman talks about how Angel was supposed to speak Spanish fluently. So the character was changed to an American expatriate who hates being in Mexico so much that what Spanish he does speak is deliberately bad. When Jesus searches for Aurora after she takes Cronos, he stops at a double door. .

Behind him, reflected in the glass of the door, are the crew and equipment.. [discussing why Deiter wants “Cronos”] Jesus Gris: He thinks it will help him live longer. Angel de la Guardia: [laughs] That devil does nothing but shit and rage all day, and he wants to live longer? The US video has some explicit nudity added. While the original American theatrical version has a prologue and fragments of dialogue in English, the secondary market version will be entirely in Spanish.

The same is true here

Cronos is the first feature film from director Guillermo del Toro and is fondly remembered as a horror classic that is a bit rough but still has a lot of atmosphere, creepy images and del Toro. signature touches. Personally, I have always preferred del Toro’s non-horror films, but I can’t deny that he has a unique flair for them. We have disturbing fetishistic images of bugs, we have gold watch mechanisms, we have a slow descent into madness, we have a masterful use of darkness and shadow to create an enclosed, claustrophobic atmosphere, and we have that distinct Latin American leanness.

The diverse cast is also talented and really helps sell you on the mood

;o story? An old antiques dealer Jesús Gris (Federico Luppi) finds an ancient alchemical device that promises to grant eternal life to anyone who harnesses its power and provides the right sacrifices. Unfortunately, other countries are also after the device, so Gris has to deal with the side effects of his newfound immortality, while also trying to protect himself and his loved ones. Classic imagery, but del Toro’s take on these old myths and ideas is refreshing and well-executed. You can see that the budget constraints prevent him from telling the story he wants to tell, but overall it’s not a bad story.

Luppi and Ron Perlman are two shining stars and would later star in many other films directed by del Toro

Cronos is not the best horror film I have seen, but if you enjoyed del Toro’s later films, it might be worth watching the very first one.
