Paul King, director of the previous two films, has decided not to direct this installment
Line of Events
Paddington returns to Peru to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, who now lives at the Retired Bears Home. Join the Brown family on an exciting adventure as a mystery takes them on an unexpected journey. However, he came up with the idea for this third film and was involved as an executive producer.
It follows Paddington (2014)
The Paddington we never needed. My son was 7 when Paddington 2 was released and it is one of my all-time favourite films, so the 7-year wait for the third installment brought with it the hope that Paddington in Peru might be as good as the first two films. It isn’t.
The children are now young adults reduced to very little dialogue
The jokes we get from the main characters like Mrs Bird are virtually non-existent. Sally Hawkins brought such a charming quirkiness to the character of Mary Brown that no matter what the franchise says, she was truly irreplaceable. It would have served the legacy of the series better if Mary Brown had simply abandoned this venture or given up.
Banderas’ character and Gina don’t work either, though I don’t think it’s because of either actor
The brilliant slapstick from the second film has largely disappeared, or is recreated again, but not as well. I may be the only one with this opinion, but I really wanted to see a bit of Paddington’s relationship with his Aunt Lucy, and that hasn’t happened either. I was relieved to see in the credits “and Phoenix Buchanan as Phoenix Buchanan.” Bring back Sally Hawkins for Paddington 4 as well and then end the series.
It’s a shame to move away from the brilliantly charming and funny Paddington in Peru
